Norman Franks is the author of many books on World War I aero combat. This work joins others in the Osprey series covering such diverse fighting aircraft as the Albatross, Fokker DR I, several SPAD models and Sopwith variants. Even non-WWI specialists will be familiar with the Fokker D VII, arguably the best pursuit plane of the war. Less well know is the limited-production Sopwith Triplane, flown exclusively by the Royal Navy Flying Corps and a handful of French naval aviation squadrons in Flanders. Canadian ace Raymond Collishaw, who went on to command the RAF in the Western Desert in WWII, made many of his kills in this highly maneuverable craft, which was the inspiration for the Fokker's DR I triplane.
