Founded in 1980, The Western Front Association brings together those eager to learn about what scholar-diplomat George Kennan labeled "the seminal tragedy of the 20th century." The WFA seeks to honor and perpetuate the memory of those who fought on both sides of the battlefront. We concentrate particularly on the causes of the conflict and its impact on our times. Members' interests range far beyond the fighting in France and Flanders. Our focus extends to all combat theaters, as well as to the political, diplomatic, economic, social, scientific, cultural, literary and spiritual dimensions of this, our first industrialized war.

Seminars.

In addition to our annual national weekend seminar, WFA chapters throughout North America sponsor frequent symposia to hear presentations on all aspects of World War One and to give members the chance to exchange ideas with others members and professional historians. We have hosted seminars at West Point, the USAF Museum, and the Naval Aviation Museum, at the Harvard Club in Boston and at Brown University. We are actively planning seminars at The Citadel in Charleston, the Union Jack Club in London, the Liberty Memorial in Kansas City and at the Canadian War and Aviation Museums.

Tours.

WFA Branches and affiliates in America, the UK and Europe sponsor several expertly guided tours to the Western Front, the Italian Front and Gallipoli each year.

Publications and Awards.

Members of the United States Branch of the Western Front Association annually receive three issues of both the Branch journal, Camaraderie, and the Branch newsletter, The Field Memo. These publications contain articles on WWI history, news on Branch and Chapter events and activities, and other information related to WWI. Members are invited and encouraged to contribute to these publications. The Branch awards three annual prizes: The Norman B Tomlinson Book Prize of $3,000 for the best full length historical work reviewed and recommended by the Book Prize Committee during the year, an Undergraduate Essay Prize of $1,000, and a High School Essay Prize of $500. Information on these prize programs and other Branch programs can be found on the Branch website at www.wfa-usa.org/new/news_ev.htm

Members of the WFA USA Branch may become members of the WFA-United Kingdom. Members of the WFA-UK receive three issues annually of both the UK journal, Stand To!, and their Bulletin. Information on membership in the WFA-UK can be found on the UK website at www.westernfrontassociation.com/aboutus/membership.php.
