The winner of the 2009 Norman B. Tomlinson Jr. Book Prize is William J.
Philpott for his book Bloody Victory: The Sacrifice on the Somme and
the Making of the Twentieth Century, Little Brown, 2009. This prize
of $3,000 is offered annually by the United States Branch of the Western
Front Association for the best work of history on World War One in English.
Dr. Philpott's book will be published in the United States in October 2010 by
Knopf Doubleday under the title Three Armies on the Somme: The First
Battle of the Twentieth Century. Dr. Philpott is senior lecturer in
the Department of War Studies at King's University, London.
The winner is selected by a panel chaired by Professor Dennis Showalter of
Colorado College, a past President of the Society for Military History. Other
panelists are Dr. Michael Neiberg of the University of Southern Mississippi
and Ambassador (retired) Leonard G. Shurtleff, past President of The Western
Front Association's U.S. Branch.
