Dr. Lengel teaches history at the University of Virginia. He receives a check for $3,000.

The winner of the next Tomlinson Book Prize will be announced at our Annual National Seminar (location to be announced) in 2009.

The Tomlinson Prize is awarded annually by the United States Branch of the Western Front Association for the best work of history, in English, on the World War One era. It consists of $3,000 and a certificate. The prize is endowed by Norman B. Tomlinson, Jr., a long-time member and Director-emeritus of the United States Branch of the Western Front Association. The recipient of the Annual Norman B. Tomlinson Jr. Book Award is chosen by a panel chaired by Dennis Showalter of Colorado College. The other panel members are Holger Herwig of the University of Calgary, Hew Strachan of Oxford University, Robert Cowley, formerly editor of Military History Quarterly, and Brigadier General (retired) Robert Doughty, formerly chairman of the History Department at the United States Military Academy.

The annual award winner is selected by a panel chaired by Dennis Showalter, past President of the Society for Military History and Professor of History at Colorado College. The other members of the Prize Panel for 2003 are Holger H. Herwig, Professor of History at the University of Calgary, Dr. Hew Strachan of Oxford University, Brig. Gen. Robert Doughty, retired head of the History Department at West Point, and Robert Cowley, former editor of Military History Quarterly.
